With the wide Clyde Estuary separating the Ayrshire coast from the Mull of Kintyre, the Isle of Arran and granite bowl of Ailsa Craig, there is much to appreciate visually. Turnberry's iconic lighthouse gives direction to outward bound players while the Turnberry Hotel and Spa provides a magnificent welcoming goal during the homeward stretch. It was at Turnberry here during the 1977 Open Championship that Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson locked horns to offer one of the finest bouts in sport with Watson prevailing. The 'Duel in the Sun' is considered by many to be the finest tournament played in the last half of the 20th century. Watson returned to Turnberry's Ailsa golf course again in 2009 and so nearly became the oldest major winner in the game's history.
