Royal Troon
St Andrews Luxury Golf present Royal Troon - Royal Troon can be incorporated into
any golf vacation or golf tour to Scotland with ‘Guaranteed Tee Times’
As with most 'Royal' clubs, one presumes Royal Troon Golf Club has held its imperial status for
centuries but the title was not bestowed until 1978, the club's centenary year. This makes Royal Troon
the youngest 'Royal' golf club in the world. It is also a relative newcomer as an Open Championship
venue. The first Open event was played here in 1923.
Royal Troon, as many past players have found, is an enigmatic, examining links golf course not to be
looked to for sympathy. The first five holes of the course are relatively straightforward, a typical links
layout running close to the sea with high dunes offering little protection from the prevailing south-
westerly winds. The 6th at 577 yards, is one of the longest Par 5's of all Open golf venues.
The 8th or Postage Stamp is Royal Troon's most famous hole. From the tee, looking out to sea, it
somehow seems a long way to that tiny little target perched on a sandy knoll and surrounded by
treacherously deep sand traps. For visitors it's only 120 yards, the shortest hole on the Open circuit.
Never the less, in a strong headwind, the Postage Stamp can often call for a 3 iron. This is a death or
glory hole, a birdie opportunity for those that hit and hold the narrow green or a calamity for those that
find themselves in one of the surrounding bunkers. Arnold Palmer scored a 7 here in 1973 while one
German amateur, in competition, racked up a confounded 15. At St Andrews Luxury Golf we believe that
including Royal Troon in your golf tour to Scotland is a golf experience not to be missed.
