Thanks for the photos from my
Old Course & St Andrews visit.
John and I look great on the 1st
tee and I really enjoyed John’s
company. He is, without doubt, a
uniquely gifted individual whose
years of experience of the
subtleties of The Old Course
became evident.

Gullane No 1
St Andrews Luxury Golf present Gullane No 1 - Gullane No 1 can be incorporated into
any golf vacation or golf tour to Scotland with ‘Guaranteed Tee Times’
Golf grew organically at Gullane, gradually spreading over the open linksland that surrounds this little
East Lothian township. Today, as you arrive from Edinburgh all you can see are golf holes.
Gullane No 1 was established in 1884 although golf was played here perhaps centuries before. The
present course has hosted many amateur events and is a final qualifying course for the Open
Championship when at Muirfield - just on the other side of the village.
Gullane Hill plays a principal role in No 1’s routing certainly for the first seven holes before the layout
swoops down to the shore of the Firth of Forth. The 2nd is 380 yards but plays much longer due to a
steady climb and the wind that tunnels through the tight valley. It is a great driving hole with the second
shot rising into the declivity with its long, elongated green. The view standing at the 7th tee is most
inspiring across the usually choppy waters of the Firth of Forth to the Kingdom of Fife beyond. The
outline of 'Auld Reekie' as Edinburgh was once known is prominent to the west while Muirfield's
hallowed turf is visible along the coast to the east.
The start of the back nine from the 10th to the 12th is one of the longest consecutive runs in Scotland.
You do well to record 5, 5, 5 here. This is the mark of Gullane No 1's character. While the temptation for
visitors is to go hard at Gullane No 1's array of elongated tests, it rarely pays. Wind and ravenous rough
conspire against you; it's the cannier player who sticks to the short stuff that will prevail.
