Established in the early 1920's with its Kings & Queens courses being the first commissions for 5 times Open Championship winner, James Braid. Both courses remain perhaps the finest examples of his prodigious course architectural career. Gleneagles came into existence during the golden age of rail travel when there was growing demand for top-drawer destinations especially in Scotland. The 'Palace in the Hills' quickly grew into one of the greatest golf resorts in the world - as it remains today. The first impression you get of Gleneagles King's course is that it seems to reflect its breathtaking elevated environment 'in miniature'. The first few holes climb and fall over a surging terrain encompassed with heather, gorse, bracken and indigenous pine and birch trees with the backdrop of Glen Devon and the peaks of the Trossachs and Ben Vorlich on the western horizon. Braid framed most of the holes in such a way to make approach shots all the more exhilarating. Club selection is everything on these approaches, firing into Sylvain arenas that are often visually difficult to judge.
